Candlesticks with Winged Putti and Floral Decorations
Silver and ivory, Height: 21 cm
This pair of candlesticks, crafted in 1923 in Sheffield by the renowned workshop Joseph Rodgers & Sons, represents a sublime example of the refined synthesis between precious metallurgy and the art of carving. The objects feature a slender and elegant structure, where the cool brilliance of the silver harmoniously blends with the warmth of the ivory.
The central part of the stem is entirely dedicated to a complex decoration in carved ivory, animated by finely sculpted figures of putti that seem to emerge from an intertwining of vegetal and floral motifs. These small winged geniuses, rendered with extreme plastic softness, support a smooth central shield framed by scrolls and acanthus leaves, lending the ensemble a dynamism typical of late-century Neo-Baroque taste. It is interesting to note that, while the silver components were manufactured in the 1920s, the ivory sections were likely crafted in the 19th century
At the base of each candlestick, the silver surface bears the history of the object through a series of hallmarks that certify its authenticity and provenance. The distinctive symbols of the workshop are clearly visible: the Star and Maltese Cross flanked by the initials JR, the trademark of Joseph Rodgers—a company founded in 1682 that became world-famous for its superior quality.
Alongside these, the Crown identifies Sheffield as the assay office, while the Lion Passant (sometimes mistakenly confused with the standing figure of Britannia) ensures the national standard for Sterling Silver. Finally, the lowercase cursive letter "f" precisely dates the silver production to the year 1923.
Historically, these artifacts are positioned in a period of great fervor for British decorative arts, straddling the solidity of Victorian tradition and emerging aesthetic trends. Operating in the industrial heart of Sheffield and boasting a prestigious showroom in London, Joseph Rodgers & Sons expertly interpreted the bourgeois desire for luxury.
In these candlesticks, Late-Victorian eclecticism is expressed through the fusion of precious materials and references to Classical and Renaissance themes, reworked with a sensibility that foreshadows the ornamental complexity of the new century. These were objects that served not only a functional purpose but acted as true symbols of status and taste within the elite salons of the era.
