The Education of the Virgin
Terracotta with traces of polychromy; 26.5 x 20.5 x 12 cm
This terracotta sculpture is a typical example of 18th-century Neapolitan domestic devotion. The group depicts the Education of the Virgin, a theme deeply cherished in local tradition, rendered here with an almost theatrical immediacy.
The composition is solid, featuring Saint Anne seated as she holds an open book for her daughter. However, the most distinctive and fascinating aspect of the sculpture lies in the characterization of the faces, particularly that of Saint Anne.
Adhering to the specific aesthetics of the Neapolitan school of the Settecento, the artist chooses not to idealize the Saint. Instead, she is portrayed with an extreme realism bordering on the grotesque. The deep wrinkles, the sharp profile, and the almost caricatural expression are not signs of technical ineptitude; rather, they represent the pinnacle of an expressive pursuit focused on the "truth of nature" (verità di natura).
