Material & Dimensions: Marble, 35.5 x 66 x 17 cm

Latin Inscription (Front): IN TE DOMINE SPERAVI NON CONFUNDAR IN AETERNUM [In thee, O Lord, have I put my trust: let me never be confounded]

This small altar (altarolo) for private devotion is carved from white marble and is attributable to 18th-century Genoese production. It is characterized by a Late Baroque style that remains dynamic in form while already leaning toward the softer, more fluid elegance of the Rocaille. The composition is set upon a rectangular base featuring the incised Latin inscription: “IN TE DOMINE SPERAVI NON CONFUNDAR IN AETERNUM” (Psalm 31). This formula, expressing trust in divine protection, was frequently associated with domestic devotional objects.

On either side are two reclining putti, modeled with soft, naturalistic anatomy, shown blowing into long trumpets directed toward the center. Each figure rests upon a cornucopia overflowing with coins—a clear allegory of wealth and abundance. Within a Christian context, this iconographic theme represents prosperity granted by Divine Providence. The central circular motif, framed by scrolls and leaf patterns (racemes), holds a polychrome stone insert (likely marble or pietra dura), designed as the visual and spiritual focal point of the piece.

This altar served a devotional purpose: it would have been placed on a table, a mantle, or within a small domestic oratory to support a crucifix, a sacred statuette, a relic, or a votive image. In some instances, it may have also functioned as a base for candlesticks during private prayer.
