Piazzetta San Marco

Oil on canvas, 28 x 44.5 cm

With frame, 37 x 53.5 cm

This 18th-century work belongs to the celebrated tradition of Venetian vedutismo (view painting). This genre, which reached its zenith in the 1700s with masters such as Canaletto and Guardi, continued to enjoy extraordinary popularity throughout the following century, fueled by the desire of Grand Tour travelers to possess a tangible memento of the "Serenissima."

The painting offers a view of Piazzetta San Marco from a slightly elevated vantage point, allowing the observer to take in the symbols of Venetian power and history. On the left, the perspective is defined by the solid mass of the Sansovinian Library, whose classical arches lead the eye toward the center of the composition, where the imposing St. Mark’s Campanile stands tall. In the foreground, the column topped by the winged Lion—symbol of both the Evangelist and the city itself—is prominently featured. To the right, the Gothic façade of the Doge’s Palace emerges, characterized by its distinctive pinkish masonry and traceried loggia, which leads towards St. Mark’s Basilica, partially visible in the background.

The artist chooses to populate the square with numerous figurine (small figures) of popular flavor, rendered with rapid and lively touches of color. These characters, dressed in the fashions of the time or in costumes recalling 18th-century traditions, lend the scene a sense of everyday vitality, transforming the architectural view into an urban narrative. The atmospheric rendering is dominated by a clear, crisp light, typical of a Venetian morning, which enhances the architectural volumes and creates sharp shadows on the pavement. The palette favors warm ochre tones, harmonized by a blue sky dotted with white clouds.

The state of conservation shows a natural and widespread craquelure, the morphology of which serves as a valuable chronological indicator, confirming the dating of the work to the mid-18th century.
