This alabaster bust reflects an original made and signed by Vittorio Pochini, sculptor volterra who was able to bring back the use of this material in the course of his career. The versatility in creating new subjects that broke away from the neoclassicism of Canova’s matrix, allowed to broaden the audience of clients interested in new genres that represented not only models and images derived from classical antiquity. The subject in this case demonstrates the sense of novelty that came to modernize the sculptural art of the city of Volterra at a time when the production of Volterra, to measure itself with the national market and its demands, It needed new ideas to adapt to the new tastes and new production methods which had to cope with the advent of ever-increasing industrialization. The realistic vein that developed in the second half of the century as a response to the idealizations both classicist and romantic matrix is here interpreted through a figure that belongs to a world closer to popular imagination, As the fishermen. There is certainly a softer and more loving interpretation in the happy face of this child who smiles satisfied as he looks with joy at the two freshly caught fish. The two animals, together with the straw hat and nets that wrap like a cloak the shoulders of the infant, as well as being minutely described in scales, ropes and weaves revealing an absolute mastery of the sculptor, They tell us a piece of daily reality related to the world of fishing and, at the same time, that of childhood.Ultimately a more prosaic everyday life, made of toil and work, is represented here by the sweetness of tender age, so candid and innocent to be able to elevate an ordinary moment to a wonderful piece of sentimental sweetness.
