The profound renewal of the ebanistery, first in Lombardy, then nationally and then European, came with the gradual abandonment of the prevailing styles of Rococo at the end of the 18th century. The Lombard production of inlaid furniture lasted until the forties/fifties of the nineteenth century, concentrating in half a century extraordinary examples of this happy change. The undisputed protagonist of the art scene in neoclassical Milan was Giuseppe Maggiolini, the first cabinetmaker to be defined by contemporary sources as an artist. Active already at the end of the eighteenth century, Maggiolini soon put aside the repetitive language of Rococo thanks to the summons to the court of Ferdinand of Habsburg, an archduke settled in the city of Menegna in the seventies. In this enlightened context Maggiolini had the opportunity to collaborate with the most up-to-date exponents of the artistic and architectural field, engaged in the archducal construction sites of today’s Palazzo Ducale in Milan and Monza.

The present, clearly invented in Lombardy, reflects the incisiveness of Maggiolini’s art: in a subtle game of sinuous symmetries, daring ornamental modules are depicted around a central octagon. The internal perimeter plates at the walnut lastronatura are enriched with phytomorphic volutes elaborated in an alternation of lobed flowers and leaves; The presence of newts holding racemes in the largest segment and dolphins with a tail rolled up at the corners of the contour octagon contribute to visually centralize the main composition, consisting of flower and ray racemes. The boxwood thread delimits the vivacity of the colors of cherry and rosewood, accentuating in vibrant alternation the preciousness of the artifact. The elegance of the table is enhanced by the coil legs, with a small nut to which is connected a wavy leaf, evocative visual lightness. It is possible to compare the solutions devised by the present with the drawings of the workshop of Maggiolini, now preserved in the Cabinet of Milanese Designs (but v. also G. Beretti, A. González-Palacios, Giuseppe Maggiolini. Catalogue reasoned of the drawings, Milan 2014).
