The pair of candlesticks presents three flames in bronze embossed and finely chiseled with decorations to volutes foliacee, vegetal motives, face of noble inside reserve and mascheroni. In the center are two statuettes (under the base is the trademark of the JP manufacture) depicting two young people dressed in country clothes, representing the theme of pastoral love, Also noted by the letter and dove held by the boy and addressed to his beloved. This theme was strongly appreciated by the aristocracy and the nascent bourgeoisie, as an idealization of love between characters from the bucolic environment. The artist’s attention is focused on the polychromy of porcelain, but not hesitating to contrast these bright tones with that of bronze, playing with the meticulous decoration made in chisel, which makes some surfaces appear more opaque. The light is thus reflected on the surfaces, creating an effect such that the eye can hardly stop on a particular, also thanks to the extreme attention to detail. The structure of the two objects is made of a sheet of bronze, which is raised and finely chiseled, so it can be assumed that among the more than eighty workers who worked in the Petit factory there were also some who specialized in casting and working with bronze.
At Sèvres, Musée National de Céramique, are preserved some pieces by the French Jacob Petit (Paris 1796-1868), a very original Parisian ceramist with great imagination. From 1822 he joined the Manufacture de Sèvres, later opening a factory in his own, at Fontainbleau, which employed 80 workers and had a workshop in Paris. His artistic production consists mainly of decorative objects such as plates, vases, teapots, perfume bottles, but also lights and even fireplaces. His works are in fact characterized by a daring inventiveness that takes inspiration from the different decorative repertoires, both of past and contemporary eras, even from different geographical areas, such as the East.
If for a long time the creations of Jacob Petit were strongly criticized because of the bright colors and excessive eclecticism that characterized them, today the objects bearing his signature are highly sought after for their originality, the richness of polychromy and are considered a guarantee of quality.
The model to which we refer for the pair of candlesticks is that of the famous porcelain of Capodimonte. Produced from the first half of the eighteenth century in the Real Fabbrica di Capodimonte, founded in Naples by King Carlo of Bourbon and his wife Maria Amalia of Saxony.
