The precious panel belongs to the circle of Adriaen Brouwer, Flemish painter of the Dutch Golden Age. At a young age, Brouwer moved from Antwerp to Haarlem, where he became a student of Frans Hals and Adriaen van Ostade. Appreciation of his works among contemporaries spread very quickly, even to his most famous colleagues, so much so that both Rubens and Rembrandt bought several of his works. Unfortunately, the works that have survived are few, also because of his early death at just 33 years old, making this painting even more rare and valuable. His characterizations were a real watershed in the painting of the time, through a thematic treatment very close to the reality of the taverns and taverns of the Flemish cities of the time; In addition, the strong colors contrasting with the dark setting stand out even more while the materiality of the painting gives tone and body to the figures in the foreground. The environment behind the smoker is more nuanced and blunt in the contours, with faces and expressions that are distorted in the dim brightness of the room, poorly illuminated. The subject fits perfectly into the production of Brouwer, who specialized in the representation of farmers, drinkers and smokers, within contexts such as gambling dens, taverns and taverns. It is worth noting the psychological attention, just like that of his master Frans Hals, given to the protagonists of his representations, as this smoker, caught with the thoughtful look out of the plane, almost lost among the fumes of alcohol and pipe. The discomposed pose, with the jug resting obliquely on the right hand and the legs wide and in precarious balance on the stool, adds further likelihood to the look and the precise moment that is living in the tavern, part of the group but at the same time isolated and protagonist.
