This watch rack is made of precious silver partially gilded, to which must be added the splendid base and column, both in jasper, on which are seated by two playing putti ivory sculpted elephant. All this is accompanied by a small pocket watch with 14 carat gold case, remontoir and cylinder movement; the motion of the hands is currently working, which gives an idea of the enormous quality of workmanship, Also visible in the partially golden dial with Arabic numerals. These objects are typical of the German production of the late 19th century and more precisely of the city of Hanau, in central Germany. From the middle to the late nineteenth century, in fact, many reproductions were made in this city in French or German rococo style; the 'father' of this industry was August Schleissner, virtuoso silver Like Neresheimer, he developed the production of highly decorative objects, exhibited at major European and world exhibitions. The great success of the Hanau factories also stems from the on-site education at the city’s design school, the Koenigliche Zeichenakademie, where courses in art history, drawing, carving, modelling for employees and apprentices were held. The taste for design and objects of the past made craftsmen practiced on old models but also on those of more recent periods, such as baroque, rococo and neoclassicism, helping to give the works a certain versatility, able to integrate typologies and forms from different eras and styles. The eclecticism of style is also flanked by that of materials, as can be seen in the work described here, where the excellence of the technique can be measured both on the musical putti in ivory and in details in silver, To get to the base in jasper and the pocket watch at the top.
