Art Deco is the daughter of the post-war period of the First World War and expresses the desire to go beyond the tragic recent past and live life with debauchery, immersing in luxury and frivolity. His iconographic and visual sources are different and related to different fields: from the ancient Egyptian civilization to jazz music, very popular at that time. This new artistic trend encapsulates the concept of "modernity" inspired also by technological and architectural innovations of that historical period, such as electric lights, skyscrapers and transatlantic. The fulcrum of the development of the Art Deco style is certainly France: with the international exhibition in Paris in 1925, the style reaches its maximum popularity and the dictates of the Deco are insinuated into the visual imagination of all the European artists. Probably of French origin is the model of this bronze: the iconography in question was proposed for the first time, around the middle of the 20’s, by the Swiss-naturalized French artist Edwin Boucher (1879-1968): the allegorical figure, Intent on lifting a heavy boulder by using a stick, it conveys a strong sense of dynamism and vitalism, fully in line with the ideals of post-EuropeanWar, ready to release itself with energy from the burden of conflict. Boucher’s model fascinates various artists of his generation, who propose it again in a series of beautiful polymaterial compositions, of which this one is one of the most successful examples.
