The work, a view of the Doge’s Palace in Venice, is by Rafael Senet y Pérez, painter and watercolourist active between Spain and Italy at the end of the twentieth century. Born in Seville, he attended the Real Academia de Bellas Artes de Santa Isabel de Hungría at the main Andalusian school, attending courses taught by esteemed professors Joaquín Domínguez Bécquer and Eduardo Cano. After a short stay in Madrid, Senet moved to Rome where, under the guidance of José Villegas Cordero, he completed his studies and training: during his years in Italy, the Andalusian artist made several trips, especially to Venice, The city for which he has a great fascination. The iconographic theme of the views of Venice is frequently used throughout the entire corpus of the Spanish artist. In this watercolor, the artist meticulously portrays the gothic facade of the Doge’s Palace and a stretch of the monumental shore of the Schiavoni. Senet, in the vast series of views of Venice, often makes use of the watercolor technique, as can be seen also with regard to the view of the church of Saints John and Paul and the view of the Rialto bridge. Generally, the medium of watercolor is particularly popular in regard to nineteenth-century views of Venice: probably based on the famous series by William Turner, from the forties of the XIX century, there are many artists, both Italian and foreign, who make use of this particular technique for the representation of lagoon landscapes.
