The refined and rare sculpture made on a raised copper plate depicts the flagellation of Jesus, an episode that occurred during the trial celebrated by the Roman prosecutor Pontius Pilate, narrated by the Canonical Gospels (Matthew 27,26; Mark 15,15; Luke 23,16; John 19,1).

The work under consideration is characterized by high formal quality and compositional ability. The variety of poses, and the lively gestuality of the figures give vitality and realism to the representation, transmitting the sense of excitement of the moment and its deep meaning. The architectural definition of the scene is also very beautiful, where great care is given to details, such as columns and capitals, and where the barrel vault gives depth and space to the whole work.
