The canvas depicts a young married couple trying to have an art expert evaluate a painting in his studio. The connoisseur is sitting on a comfortable armchair and holds in his hands the painting, whose subject is hidden from view of the viewer, causing a flicker of mystery to light up in the subject, while the young people are busy explaining the subject of the painting. The room in which the work is set is completely adorned with paintings, with a stucco arrangement, as was typical in ancient aristocratic houses where entire halls and long corridors lend themselves with their high ceilings to host the most varied artistic productions. Examples of nineteenth-century dwellings so embellished can still be seen today in the collection of Palazzo Borromeo on Isola Bella and Palazzo Colonna in Rome.
