Sketch of the Arch of Titus

Oil on canvas, cm 60 x 42

In the painting under examination, dating to the nineteenth century, a detail of the Arch of Titus is depicted.

Placed on the slopes of the Palatine Hill, where the clivus begins its ascent towards the hill, the arch of Titus was built by Domitian, last emperor of the Flavian dynasty, in 81 d.c. in honor of father Vespasian and his brother Titus: built in memory of the victory in the great Jewish war (66 -73 AD) during which they devastated and sacked Jerusalem ( 70 AD).

The arch, with a single flange and in pentelic marble, is finely decorated. The pillars of the facades are decorated with pairs of columns with niches between them. Their capitals are composite, carved with parchment and acanthus leaves. The inscription on the east side of the attic is preserved, it translates into "The senate and the Roman people at the Divo Tito Vespasiano Augusto, son of the Divo Vespasiano".

Originally, the arch was dominated by a bronze group statue in which the deified emperor Titus was on a quadriga pulled by elephants.

Outside is visible a small continuous frieze on which the triumphal procession winds, and two winged victories are placed in the archivolts; inside, at the center of the coffered vault a relief shows the apotheosis of Titus, who ascends to heaven on an eagle, While on the walls two large panels illustrate the main moments of triumph. In one the imperial quadriga, led by the goddess Rome, with Titus crowned by victory; in the other the Roman soldiers carry the works stolen from the Temple of Jerusalem: the silver trumpets, the table of the Ark of the Covenant and the seven-arm candelabra.
