A vortex of colours and movement envelops us as we contemplate the painting depicting a "Bacchanal" by Cornelis van Haarlem, a work that embodies the exuberance and hedonism of a Dionysian feast. The copper, made between 1620 and 1630, transports us into an atmosphere of joyful frenzy, where gods and nymphs surrender to banquets, music and libations.
Van Haarlem’s palette is rich and vibrant, exploding into a symphony of reds, blues, greens and gilds. The nude bodies of the protagonists stand out against a background of shady woods and blue skies, creating a chromatic contrast that accentuates the intensity of the scene.
Van Haarlem’s work is not only a celebration of sensual pleasure, but also a reflection on the ephemeral nature of life and the caducity of worldly pleasures. The faces of the characters, even if exalted by intoxication, betray a melancholy vein, as if they were aware of the transience of the moment.
The painting is by an artist who was in orbit around the Master. The original version is now kept at the Musée des Augustins in Toulouse.
Cornelis Corneliszoon van Haarlem (1562 - 11 November 1638) was a Dutch painter and artist, one of the most famous exponents of Mannerism in the Netherlands, and an important predecessor of Frans Hals.
Member of the school of Haarlemche Mannerism was influenced above all by the works of Bartholomeus Spranger, painted numerous portraits, alternating with numerous mythological and biblical episodes. Initially Corneliszoon made large-scale works, with exceptionally grotesque nudes. Later his works acquired a more naturalistic character.
When his parents left Haarlem in 1572, Corneliszoon stayed there and was hired by the painter Pieter Pietersz., his first teacher. Later, Corneliszoon studied in Rouen, France and Antwerp, Belgium.
