Originally from Marseille, Lacroix’s first paintings included extensive marine art, titled Porto italiano at dawn and Porto italiano at sunset. Attracted by the charm of the territory, rich in inspiration, the artist moved into the city of Rome in 1754. He then visited Naples three years later, being influenced by colleagues such as Francesco Zuccarelli (1702-1788), Marco Ricci (1676-1729/30) and Adrien Manglard (1695-1760) with Joseph Vernet (1714-1789), transits at that chronological height in Italy. Despite his subsequent move to Paris, Lacroix voted loyalty to Italian landscapes, continuing to produce marine architecture generally fantastic and signing variously with different names.
The artist was long active alongside Vernet, especially during the Roman period, in the city for about twenty years.
Like Poussin and Lorrain, Lacroix was distinguished by the ability to joust carefully atmospheric phenomena, to which he always dedicated up to two thirds of the painting. He exhibited at the Salon de Colisée in 1776, which introduced him to the Salon de la Correspondance in Paris in the years 1780 and 1782.
His works experienced a widespread revival thanks to the engravings of Le Veau and Le Mire. Several of his paintings are now in the Toledo Museum of Art in Ohio, the Dijon Museum of Art and the National Museum in Stockholm.
