This seventeenth-century marble sculpture, depicting a "Reclining and Blindfolded Putto," is a valuable specimen of Renaissance and Mannerist artistic production. The work, modest in scale, is distinguished by its grace and delicate execution, characteristics typical of the sculpture of that period.
The putto is rendered in a languid pose, reclining on its left side with the head slightly elevated. The blindfold covering its eyes introduces an element of mystery and symbolism, alluding to the blindness of love, a motif frequently associated with the figure of Cupid. The left arm is extended, with the hand resting on the base, while the right arm is bent with the hand placed upon the chest. The legs are folded, conforming to the sinuous curvature of the body.
During the sixteenth century, the sculpture of putti underwent significant evolution. The iconography of the putto, which traces its origins to the heroes and genii of classical art, became a central element in Renaissance and Mannerist art. These naked, winged infants served various functions. They acted as allegorical symbols, often representing love, fertility, or joy, or as decorative elements utilized to embellish fountains, funerary monuments, altars, and palaces, thereby imbuing compositions with a touch of vivacity and grace. Within the religious context, putti were interpreted as angels or cherubim, contributing to the creation of a spiritual atmosphere.
Sixteenth-century art, with masters such as Donatello and Michelangelo, elevated the sculpture of putti to new levels of dynamism and complexity. The work under examination fits seamlessly into this context, exhibiting an aesthetic sensibility characteristic of the era. The sinuous posture and the softness of the forms reflect the artistic trends of the period, which sought to merge the classical heritage with novel expressions of beauty and movement.
