The painting, an oil on canvas of modest dimensions, depicts a small dog with short white hair with beige and brown patches, emerging from a dark neutral background.
The presence of the dog in the history of art has given rise to a real kind of painting, the so-called "animalist painting". After the man and his figure, the dog is certainly the most represented animal by the artists. Present for millennia in the lives of men and in their imagination, accustomed to recognizing their familiarity in a myriad of depictions through the centuries, dogs have always been considered faithful companions of the human species.
The most immediate reading, in fact, is certainly the feeling of fidelity that binds the animal to man: the dog is the closest friend of his master, as well as his faithful servant.
From the 16th to the 17th century, the rich social class of the merchant bourgeoisie, wanting to emulate the lifestyle of the noble class, began to focus more and more on creating their own home as an oasis of domestic well-being, making the dog a must of their purchases, as well as an important status symbol.
From a formal point of view, the painting is characterized by a full-bodied, material and compact brushwork, thick contour lines and a strong chiaroscuro contrast, which gives three-dimensionality to the animal. Of remarkable artistic value is the attention paid to details, such as the light reflected in the eyes of the dog or the small studs of the collar.
