View of the Gulf of Naples and the island of Ischia

Characterized by great execution minutia the works in question representing two views related to the nineteenth century, made of tempera on paper, the first depicting a wide view of the Gulf of Naples, while the second a rare view of the island of Ischia.

Both views, which seem to be captured by the artist at sunrise or sunset, as denotes the warm and pink light that surrounds them, are distinguished by the great skill and precision in the rendering of details, returned through soft pastel shades gently gradient.

The two works are ascribable to the genre of Vedutism, developed especially from the eighteenth century and which consisted in representing views of landscapes and cities admired during their travels in an objective and "scientific".

Towards the middle of the eighteenth century it became fashionable to educate the offspring of rich families with a long journey of education and adventure, the so-called Grand Tour. Of course, it was Italy with its cities rich in art and history to be the most sought after destination of these trips: after stopping in Venice, they continued to Florence, then landing in Rome, up to Naples, where the ancient ruins of Herculaneum and Pompeii had recently been rediscovered. The influx from northern Europe of so many artists and wealthy gentlemen in fact favored the birth of a real industry of tourism elite, fueling collecting and officially decreed the success of Vedutismo.

The desire to be able to collect, at least ideally, the beautiful landscapes that overflowed Italy, led some of these travelers to ask specialized artists to create for them paintings "memory", to take with them and hang in their homes. Next to these intellectuals there were those who could not afford to travel, but still aspired to have at least a representation of the most famous places, making themselves small works that went to be the equivalent of modern postcards.
