Parrot with cherubs and flowers

The painting depicts a still life of lively splendor: within a niche there are a marble sculpture with cherubs and a cock around which, with extreme grace, intersect, following the course of the arms of the two children, vegetable racemes with violets, Striped tulips, red carnations and various species of roses. Small butterflies fly and settle on the flowers. Next to the base there is an elegant parrot that holds a claw resting on a pomegranate fruit and turns its head back towards the statues. The admonishing gesture of the standing child, leaning towards the bird with the arm pointing upwards, seems to be directed at the animal, caught in the act while stealing with the legs the grains of the fruit, demonstrating the artist’s pictorial flair that infuses realism and liveliness to the canvas. Even the lying putto looks at the animal, but in an attitude much more placid and almost disinterested than the companion. The pictorial touch and the use of bright colors for the rendering of flowers, from the intense violet of violets to the carmine red of carnations and pastel shades of roses, lights up the composition and makes it extremely real and alive. In particular, we note the contrast with the glossy patina that covers the marble sculpture, able to reflect the beam of light coming from above and underline the fleshy bodies of the two stuffed children, the flowers and the fruits on the base. The insertion of the parrot, finally, with the mantle of the bright colors, is opposed to the staticity of the two sculptures.

The signature on the base bears the words "I. Reneman fecit", Dutch painter active, according to genealogical sources, around 1772.
