The landscape illuminated by the night light of the moon that illuminates the sky sees depicted a collision between natural elements: while on one side we find the lush hilly landscape with rocks covered with shrubs and the grotesque tower with the lion of San Marco on top, on the other there is the dark sea in a storm, foaming with foam and crossed by a rash ship that tries to land at the port. The monument with the lion, a reference to San Marco and the city of Venice, perhaps alludes to a battle that involved the Republic, of which the Lisa and tattered flag is witness, perhaps just a naval clash between enemy cities.
The dark and romantic atmosphere typical of the nineteenth century is given by the ivy shoots that envelop the column and the dark cave on the edge of the slope, along with the stormy sea and the leaden sky with the clouds that thin and let pass the rays of the full moon, that sheds light on the landscape, symbol of victory over the enemy and the rosy future that surrounds the city.
