Saint Dominic of Guzman

The present wooden sculpture depicts Sant'Antoni Abate. Antonio was born in Come in Egypt in 151. At the age of twenty he sold all his possessions to lead an hermit life as an ascetic, living in solitude in the abandoned fort of Pispir, enduring and bearing every kind of temptation. Growing fame led him to abandon the hermit life to take care of the numerous faithful. Following the medieval iconography, the saint is depicted with the classic dress and hair of monks while holding a book in his hands and accompanied by an animal figure, perhaps a pig, his traditional attribute. The slender figure is expertly carved: the deep chiaroscuro that springs from the folds of the garment gives back a light volumetry, the curls of the hair, slightly and the sincere expression taken by the saint demonstrate the plastic skill of the sculptor. The garments are made by applying layers of golden leaf that is then lacquered in a second time; the artist, thanks to wise light touches, tries to recreate the idea of a precious damask cloth. The sculpture is relevant to the eighteenth century, clearly dependent on that set of formalistic conceptions that were being developed in the period.
