Adoration of the Magi

Polychrome terracotta, cm 24 x 18

This relief, made of terracotta that retains the original polychrome, depicts the famous episode of the life of Jesus of the Adoration of the Magi. According to the traditional iconography studied in the Middle Ages and consolidated in the sixteenth century, The Virgin, raised on a throne, holds the baby Jesus, while the oldest of the Magi, Baldassarre kneels before him in reverence. Behind them, to the left, are the other two Magi dressed in old clothes and holding their gifts. To the right is Saint Joseph.

An architectural backdrop, characterized by a sequence of arches of classical taste, surrounds the shoulders of the characters, including a man on horseback, belonging to the procession of the Magi.

To serve as a model to the relief is certainly the long Italian pictorial tradition that consolidates from the sixteenth century with the Venetians Titian (Kunsthistorisches Museum of Vienna) and Veronese (National gallery of London), then with the bassano and spread therefore throughout the rest of the peninsula, the motif that sees Baldassare kneeling and the virgin who exhibits the child, in outdoor contexts but with large architectural pieces to be the background as in the present.
