Adolfo Laurenti was born on 23 April 1858 in Monte Porzio (from 1872 Monte Porzio Catone). A student of the National Academy of San Luca, he taught sculpture at the Art Institute of Urbino. He was awarded several times in international competitions and exhibitions.

Adolfo Laurenti was one of the artists who helped to create the secular image of the new state born in 1861 by participating in important artistic enterprises of his time aimed especially at the construction of monuments of famous people. His artistic research starts from a realism of classical inspiration, for example in the celebrated bust of the Roman Senator, and then lands, as in the frieze on the facade of the National Gallery of Modern Art in Rome, in characters closer to floral and symbolism. At his studio were formed Libero Frizzi (1893-1954) and Edgardo Simone (1890-1948) who collaborated with Laurenti on the realization of the works for the International Exhibitions in Rome in 1911. In 1908 he worked at the Vittoriano, the most important artistic site in Rome of that period, participating in the competition for the two quadrigues intended for propylaea. They won Paolo Bartolini and Carlo Fontana but Laurenti was included in the group of artists in charge of the execution of the bas-reliefs depicting Fame and Victories for the pronai.

In 1880 he established himself nationally with the award ceremony at the Turin Exhibition where he presented four works: An Arab, An Arab, An Augur and above all the aforementioned Roman Senator, a bust that was very successful and that had the honor of being published on the cover of the Italian Illustration. In the wake of this success we can insert the present terracotta sculpture depicting a Roman togate: the bald head is crowned by bay leaves while the torso is wrapped by the voluminous drapery of a toga.

Laurenti makes the line his plastic medium par excellence: its main feature are the indefinite contours to highlight the solidity of the character. The artist always managed to give his figures a real monumentality, despite the simplification of volumes and forms.
